The Closet

I like to surround myself with little sayings and verses printed out to lift my spirit. I have some sort of little quote in just about every room of my house.
Except for my closet.
If I were to only post the picture above, the quote would read, "a place for everything, and everything in its place." I like to keep my shirts organized by color. (I learned that from my uber-organized hubby)

Then, if I were to show you this picture I should probably have this quote: "Pride goes before the fall." Because, even though a tie rack makes a great place to hang jewelry, I wouldn't be telling you the whole story.

I think the quote that needs to hang on the door of my closet should read: "A normally organized woman who keeps her entire house maintained lives here. But, she is a complex person that needs a place to call her own. The 24 square feet beyond this door are hers and hers alone. Enter at your own risk."

After all, honesty is the best policy...

This, unfortunately, is how the floor of my closet typically looks.
I know.
It's a contradiction from the upper half. Sigh.
I'm complex.
I also know that my mother is shaking her head and thinking that she taught me better. She did. Truly.

Recently, I have been convicted of said 24 square feet of madness. Not because of the typical "you should take better care of your things" reason. Rather, because I now need a sign to hang on my daughters' closets that reads:
The sins of the mother shall be passed on to her daughters.

Yesterday, we were frantically looking for shin guards, a missing Awana shirt, and a library book. Daughter A was in tears because she was leaving for soccer practice within 10 minutes. Daughter B found them in A's closet. I informed both girls that we were ALL cleaning out our closets tomorrow morning.

Daughter B decided to stay home with me while hubby did soccer duty. As soon as they left, Daughter B disappeared upstairs. I assumed she was enjoying a quiet moment to herself. 30 minutes later she came down the stairs and said with a playful grin, "I cleaned her closet for her."

Oh, precious, middle child, peacemaker of the family! What a task. What a gift of love and sacrifice!

What a gift to your mother, too. Even though she was feeling guilty for her own messy closet, you showed her that more important life lessons are still being learned.

So today I am sporting a new sign:
There are more important things in life than a clean closet

"There are more important things in life than a clean closet"....Amen!

This is why God made closet doors.

(you have just freed me from tackling my closet today...I'm thinking a road trip for a Pumpkin Spice latte will fill the time slot. I mean, seriously, my closet will always be messy, the Pumpkin Spice latte won't be here forever!)

What a sweet girl you have!

I always put off cleaning my closet, too. I'd purged every room in the house EXCEPT my closet. Kept putting it off. A leak that caused us to rip out our entire bath & closet took care of it for me! When we're done, I'm not putting back nearly the amount of stuff that was in there!

Sigh. The closet. The floor of mine looks identical.

You've encouraged me to post photos of the bonus room/office/craft space makeover.

Maybe.

On a second note, could 'B' come over here tomorrow? I've got a closet that's dying for a re-do!

Your mother DID teach you better.. But not by example! As you know, my closet is in a constant state of being "cleaned out." Right now, the bedroom sofa is loaded down with "stuff" from my closet... But the precious thing is M. knowing that is such a hard thing for R. to keep up with, & choosing on her own to use her organizing skills to show love for R.

Part 2: God is showing me there are more important things than a lot of the things that so easily occupy my time... like having my sweet grandkids drop in & spend some time with me is far more important than a lot of things!

I totally relate to your post! My mom shakes her head too...and I even hate mess and clutter...but still can't keep up.

And I'm passing it on to my daughter as well...

I love that your middle daughter cleaned her closet. That is awesome. I should have had me one of those! :)

First of all, I'm so glad your closet floor looks like that. If you were completely organized in every way I don't know that we could be friends. ;)

Second, what a precious daughter! Wow, Mom. You're teaching it and they're getting it. So cool.

What a precious child! I am truly touched by the love she demonstrated for her sister. It is an example for all of us. Let me go see how I can demonstrate love in a very practical way for another in my house today...

Oh my oh my! I have a sweet daughter - just about to turn 12, and she is a messy. The Lord is using her to teach me more things about my own heart messes than I'll ever be able to admit! I'll have to show her your closet tomorrow so she knows she's not the only one!

It is a whole lot easier to like you knowing that your entire house is not put together. ;o)

Closets are easy to ignore b/c no one really sees them.

What's my excuse for ignoring the rest of my house? Oh. Right.

Love your take on this.
